    • ELDER GEORGE M. MANGOLD 1822 - 1894

ZION'S HARP HYMNAL CREATOR, BURIED IN GRACELAND CEMETERY, FAIRBURY.

ON JANUARY 1, 1847, FROEHLICH OPENED A MEETING OF THE BRETHREN FOR ELECTION OF THE FOLLOWING ELDERS: JOHN DIEBOLD, GEORGE MICHAEL MANGOLD, FRIEDRICH PFAFF TO TAKE CARE OF THE RAPIDLY ORGANIZED CONGREGATIONS IN STRASBURG, BISCHWILLLER, REICHSHOFFEN, GUMBRECHTSHOFEN, WERDEN, NIEDERBRONN, MOUTERHOUSE, BAERRENTHAL, ZINSWILLER, RAPPERTSWILLER, KEHL, MULHOUSE, AVRICOURT AND BERANGE. JOHN DIEBOLD, ESPECIALLY, SERVED AS A FAITHFUL PIONEER IN ALSACE FOR 50 YEARS UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1896.

A YEAR BEFORE FROEHLICH'S DEATH THE MEETING HAD TO BE HELD OUTSIDE STRASBURG SO THAT ON MARCH 31, 1856, BROTHER KLEIN OF OBERBRONN WAS INSTALLED IN GUMPRECHTSHOFEN AS ELDER AND ON APRIL 1, 1856 BROTHER GUNST IN BISCHWILLER.

GEORGE MANGOLD EMIGRATED TO THE U. S. A. AFTER FROEHLICH'S DEATH. IT WAS HIS COMMISSION TO PREPARE THE ZION'S HARP USING THE FORMER CHRISTIAN HARMONICA WHICH INCLUDED 182 HYMNS USED BY THE ASSEMBLIES OF EVANGELICAL BAPTISTS.

      ______________

AFTER HIS EMIGRATION TO AMERICA AROUND 1878, HE NO LONGER WAS SERVING AS AN ELDER FOR THE CHURCH. NOT MUCH IS KNOWN ABOUT HIM WHEN HE SERVED AS AN ELDER. HE IS KNOWN MORE FOR HIS LABORS ON THE ZION'S HARP HYMNAL, HE WROTE TWENTY-SIX SONGS FOR THE BOOK.

IT IS UNCERTAIN WHERE HE LIVED WHEN HE ARRIVED IN ILLINOIS. HE MAY HAVE LIVED IN ROANOKE OR GRIDLEY FOR A TIME, BUT MUST HAVE ALSO LIVED IN THE FAIRBURY AREA AT THE END OF HIS LIFE, BECAUSE HE IS BURIED IN THE OLD CHURCH SECTION OF GRACELAND CEMETERY, IN FAIRBURY.
