!Elisha Kenyon CRANDALL, third child of Stephen Franklin and Susan (Ken
yon)
CRANDALL, was born 21 Mar 1832 at "Cold Spring House", Cross's Mills. W
hen he
was a small child the family moved to Carolina, town of Richmond.
!He attended school for about three months, and at the age of eleven ye
ars went
to work in the mill [Kenyon's Mills].
!He married (1) 1 Jun 1851 Mary Jane Sherman.
!At the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, he enlisted in Company G, 7
th Rhode
Island Volunteers. He was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg and t
aken to
a hospital at Portsmouth Grove, and then honorably discharged.
!He built a home on what is known as Christian Hill in Kenyon, R.I., an
d was
overseer of the weave room in Kenyon's Mills under Elijah KENYON.
After the death of his first wife*, he married (2) 6 Aug 1873 Lillias J
ane
CONGDON. He then moved to the Benjamin Hoxsie Farm (once occupied by h
is
grandfather, Benjamin CRANDALL) on 18 Mar 1883, and engaged in farming.
!In his political leanings he was a Republican. He was a member of the F
irst
Baptist Church of Charlestown [at Quonochontaug], yet he leaned toward t
he
Advent Faith. He was a member of Charity Lodge #23, F. & A. M. in Hope V
alley.
!He died 10 Jun 1912 in the house next to the Benjamin Hoxsie Farm, a h
ouse
which had been built by his son, Ulysses Everett CRANDALL.**
!*Mary Jane SHERMAN's death was by her own hand.
!**That house is currently [1994] owned by Bowen Franklin BLIVEN, a 3rd
great-grandson of Elisha Kenyon CRANDALL.

!David I. CRANDALL's first memory of his father was his return from the W
ar Of
The Rebellion on crutches. He received a miniball through the leg.
!He sent for his son, David, before he died and asked him to pray with h
im.
He had been a "hard man". David told me that he had never had ice crea
m as a
child, only one pair of shoes a year, and once when he hung up his stoc
king at
Christmas, his father put a lump of coal in it.
