Myrtle Charlotte Montgomery Carlyle
9/6/32 - 7/26/09
Charlotte Carlyle, a long-time Sacramento resident, died Sunday, July 26, 2009, in her home. She was 76.
She was born in Witten, SD, to Lawrence T. Montgomery and Blanche A. Montgomery. They moved to Caldwell, Idaho, in the 1940s. After attending Caldwell High School, Myrtle married Lloyd Smith in November, 1949. They had a son, Steven Ray Smith the following year.
After a divorce, she moved to California in 1956 and began using her middle name, Charlotte. She met Frank Edward Tilden and married in February, 1956.
Charlotte went to work for the State of California in 1957. Charlotte and Ed had a daughter in 1958, Charlyn Tilden. In order to be close to the Tilden family, they moved to Sacramento shortly afterward.
In late 1959, Charlotte was hired by the County of Sacramento as a Deputy Clerk working in their offices on Howe Avenue. After four years Charlotte moved downtown to 9th Street, as she became a Municipal Deputy County Clerk. Charlotte achieved her Legal Secretarial Certification in 1965, thus beginning her training to become a Superior Court Clerk. That was accomplished in 1969, when Charlotte went to work for Judges Gallagher and Tuttle. She subsequently worked under several Superior Court judges during her tenure, until her retirement in 1983.
Charlotte made many trips back to Idaho with her children and grandchildren, keeping in touch with her family and acknowledging her roots. She enjoyed music from musicals such as "Hello, Dolly" and "Bye, Bye, Birdie," and had small parts in local plays. Her hobbies also included going to the movies, crocheting, reading and fine dining.
She is survived by her son, Steve Smith of Woodland, WA, her daughter, Charlyn Tilden Sparkes of Corvallis, OR, granddaughters Cherise Akers, Herald, CA, and Monica Lindner of Elk Grove, CA, Stephanie Sparkes of Corvallis, OR, and grandsons Stacey Sparkes, Erik Sparkes and Kellen Sparkes, all from Corvallis. Brothers include Morris Montgomery, Monmouth, OR, Bill Montgomery, Hidden Springs, AR, Marvin Montgomery, Pocatello, Gene Montgomery, Blackfoot, Ted Montgomery, Waynesboro, VA, and sisters Florence Hopkins and Laura Montgomery, both of Caldwell and Linda Schor, Corvallis, OR. She also had four great-grandchildren, Dylan and Brady Buno, Herald, CA, and Brandon and Paige Lindner, Elk Grove, CA.
"Celebration of Life" to be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 6 at the College of Idaho, 2112 Cleveland Blvd., Simplot Dining Hall, S. Simplot at Finley Forrest. Placement of ashes, Canyon Hill Cemetery, 4 p.m. (No Service) Caldwell, Idaho 83605.

Notes |
- From letter written September 12, 1996 by Myrtle:
"As to Mom and Dad. I understand that he worked for Grandpa Wilson as thrasher or thresher when she was 13 and he was 20. Years later Grandma ran into himin Winner after his wife died when Irene was 4 months and Flo 2 years and 4 months which would have been in March but Mom and Dad only went together for six weeks before they got married Sept. 17, 1930. Grandma thought he would make Mom a good husband. She had a boyfriend in Nebraska Leonard Schoval who later married but had no children. He died of cancer in 1966. Mom found this out from one of cousins either Martha or Louise Roberg."
