Obituary from the Fairbury Blade:
Paul Hoffmann Killed As Train Strikes Auto
Jacob Bohning, of Germany, Meets Death in Same Accident, Which Occurred a
t Bucyrus, Ohio.
Paul Hoffmann, aged 55 years, a well known and highly esteemed far
mer residing four miles southeast of Fairbury, and Jacob Bohning, of Se
lminger, Germany, were both killed yesterday morning about five o'clock a
t Bucyrus, O., when the Hoffmann car was struck by a fast Pennsylvania p
assenger train.
Mr. Hoffmann had left Fairbury on Tuesday morning and gone to Mans
field, O., where he had met Martin Steidinger, Peter Schaffer and John B
olliger, also of Fairbury. These later three gentlemen had gone to Roc
kville, Conn., last week, where they had met four elders of the Apostol
ic Christian church, who had come to this country from Switzerland and G
ermany on a business mission connected with the church. All three cars h
ad left Mansfield early yesterday morning on their way to Bucyrus, wher
e the accident occurred.
The following message from Bucyrus tells of the accident:
Bucyrus, O., Sept. 21 (Special to The Blade)--Jacob Bohning, aged 6
2, of Selminger,
Germany, and Paul Hoffmann, aged 55, of Fairbury, Illinois, were i
stantly killed when their
automobile was struck by a fast westbound Pennsylvania passenger t
ain on the
Lincoln highway crossing here at five o'clock this morning. Both d
ied of skull
fracture.
Hoffmann, with Peter Schaffer, John Bolliger and Martin Steid
inger, Fairbury,
and Earl Baer, of Remington, Ind., had gone to Mansfield, O., to m
eet Bohning and Otto Killey, of Germany, father of Peoria, Illinoi
s, woman; and Jacob Kuenzie and Elmer Obrecht,
of Berne, Switzerland. This party of four had arrived from the Ol
d Country last Friday in New York City, and had visited in Connectic
ut before starting west to meet Illinois friends at
Mansfield.
Bohning was riding with Hoffmann while the others were in two o
ther cars. The other
two cars passed over the crossing and continued west to Upper Sand
ucky, 18 miles from
here, where they discovered the Hoffmann car was missing. They tu
ed back in
search and upon arriving at the crossing here found the demolished c
ar. The bodies
had been removed to funeral parlor [sic].
This crossing is not protected between midnight and 6 o'clock i
the morning.
Two motorists from Johnstown, Pa., saw the accident, and reported t
he Hoffmann car drove
directly in front of the train. Bodies being shipped to Fairbury t
his afternoon.
Obituary
Paul Hoffmann was born in Renourc, France, May 7, 1878, being at the ti
me of his death aged 55 years, 4 months, and 14 days. His parents were J
acob and Christina Hoffmann.
When five years of age Mr. Hoffmann came with the family to this c
ountry, locating at Forrest. Later they went to Cissna Park, where he r
eceived his education and where he grew to young manhood.
On December 7, 1902, in this city, Mr. Hoffmann was united in marr
iage to Miss Emma Slagel, and he had resided in this vicinity since tha
t time. Surviving besides Mrs. Hoffmann are the following children: Mr
s. Marie Kilgus, of Fairbury; Mrs. Martha Ifft, of Forrest; Joe, Leona, L
evi, Alice, Sam, Paul, Ralph and Clyde, at home. There are also brothe
s and sisters as follows: John, of Renourc, France; Joe, of Roanoke; A
dy, of Fountain Creek; Sam, of Cissna Park; Mrs. Lena Yost, of Fairbur
y; Mrs. Carrie Stoller, of Peoria; Mrs. Lydia Swing, of San Pierre, Ind
.; Mrs. Maggie Springer, of Congerville; Mrs. Lucy Farney, of Fountain C
eek. His father passed away in this city January 20, 1914, and his mo
ther died at Cissna Park in September, 1908.
Mr. Hoffmann was a member of the Apostolic Christian church. A go
od neighbor and a kind husband and father, he will be missed both by hi
s family and many friends.
Funeral arrangements had not been made last evening, pending the a
ival of the remains, which were expected to arrive last night or this m
orning.

Fairbury--The funeral for Paul Hoffman, who was killed when an automobi
le in which he was riding was struck by a train in Mansfield, Ohio, Thu
sday, will be held at the home here at 2 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be i
Graceland cemetery.
Paul Hoffman was the son of Jacob and Christina Hoffman, and was b
orn in Renourc, France, May 7, 1878. He came to this country with his p
arents and attended the Cissna Park schools. On Dec. 7, 1902, he marri
ed Miss Emma Slagel, who survives with the following children: Mrs. Ma
ie Kilgus, Fairbury; Mrs. Martha Ifft, Strawn; Joe, Leona, Levi, Alice
, Sam, Paul, and Ralph and Clyde, at home.
Brothers and sisters are: John of Renourc, France; Joe, Roanoke; A
dy, Fountain Creek; Sam, Cissna Park; Mrs. Lena Yot [sic], Fairbury; M
s. Carrie Stoller, Peoria; Mrs. Lydia Irving, San Pierre, Ind.; Mrs. M
aggie Spring, Congerville, and Miss Lucy Farney, Fountain Creek. Mr. H
offman was a member of the Apostolic Christian church.
The body of Jacob Bohning of Selminger, Germany who was also kille
d in the same accident, was brought here to the home of Emil Hoerr. Ri
tes will be held at the Paul Hoffman residence Sunday afternoon at the s
ame hour.
MANSFIELD STREET CROSSING SCENE OF HORRIBLE ACCIDENT
When the automobile, in which they were riding, was struck by the f
ast passenger train No. 29, at the East Mansfield street crossing of th
e Pennsylvania railroad Thursday morning at the early hour of five, Jac
ob Bohning, aged 62, of Oelminger, Wurtemburg, Germany, a visitor in th
is country for only six days and Paul Hoffman, 55, of Fairbury, Illinoi
s, were killed, death resulted from skull fractures.
The automobile belonged to the latter, which was reduced to a mass o
f wreckage. The dead men were removed to the Wise funeral home, where t
hey were prepared for shipment to Illinois.
Two Johnstown, Pennsylvania residents were eye witnesses to the cr
ash, told local police that they were driving a short distance behind t
he Hoffman car, and said they drove onto the tracks right in the path o
f the engine, pulling one of the fastest trains operated by the railroa
d company.
It is the westbound section of the famed Broadway limited and was i
charge of Conductor Tyler and George Van Osdale, engineer. Protectio
is maintained at this crossing sixteen hours a day. From 10:30 p.m. u
til 6:30 a.m. the crossing is unprotected. Mr. Hoffman was married an
d it is stated the father of ten children. Mr. Bohning leaves a wife i
Germany.
It will be remembered by Bucyrus residents that this is the same c
ossing where Miss Kathryn Scott and Pearl Shalter, both school teacher
s, were instantly killed in a closed buggy on Christmas eve about twent
y years ago, when they were returning from Miss Scott's home, near Sulp
hur Springs, with the Christmas treat for their youngsters. Debris and w
eckage was strewn past the Walnut street crossing.

Funeral services for the late Paul Hoffmann, who was killed when t
he automobile in which he was riding was struck by a train near Mansfie
ld, Ohio, Thursday morning, September 21, were held at the home southea
st of this city Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial was in Graceland c
emetery.
The body of Jacob Bohning, of Selminger, Germany, who was also kil
led in the same accident, was brought here to the home of Emil Hoerr. T
he rites were held at the Paul Hoffmann residence Sunday afternoon at t
he same hour.

Mr. Paul Hoffman and Miss Emma Slagle were united in marriage at t
he Amish church southeast of Fairbury, Sunday, December 7. The ceremon
y was performed at 3 o'clock by Rev. Chris Garber in the presence of a l
arge concourse of people. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam S
lagle, of south of Fairbury, and is a most estimable young lady. The g
oom is a resident of Cisna [sic] Park and a brother of Mrs. J. G. Swin
g, of this city. He is an industrious and energetic young man. They w
ill reside on a farm south of Fairbury and their friends join us in wis
hing them success and happiness during life. A number of Fairbury peop
le were present at the wedding.

Jacob and sons Paul and Joseph went to Paris to book passage on April 2
4, 1883. Christine and 7 children followed the next day. Had to stay i
Antwerp five days, sailing May 2. Arrived Philadelphia two weeks lat
er, boarding a train for Fairbury that same evening.

The ship was the "British Crown": BRITISH CROWN / AMSTERDAM / AMSTERDA 1

The AMSTERDAM was built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast in 1879 as the BRIT
ISH CROWN for British Shipowners, but was immediately chartered to the A
merican Line. She was a 3,563 gross ton vessel, length 410.3ft x beam 3
9ft, one funnel, four masts, iron construction, single screw and a spee
d of 12 knots. Launched on 2/8/1879, she sailed from Liverpool on her m
aiden voyage for the American Line to Philadelphia on 15/10/1879. She s
tarted her last voyage on this service on 19/8/1885 and then went to th
e Anchor Line, who used her on their London - Halifax - Boston service f
or four round voyages. In July 1887 she went to the Furness Line who us
ed her on the same run for three round voyages. She was sold to Holland A
merica Line at the end of 1887 and renamed AMSTERDAM. Refitted to carry 8
0-1st, 80-2nd and 800-3rd class passengers. On 31/12/1887 she commenced s
ailings from Rotterdam to New York. In 1893 she was fitted with triple e
xpansion engines and in 1899 her accommodation was altered to 2nd and 3
d class only. She started her last Amsterdam - New York voyage on 4/2/
1905 and was then sold to an Italian company who renamed her AMSTERDA a
