Notes |
- Notes for REV. JACOB DAVIS, SR.:
Died while on a missionary trip to Woddbridgetown, Pennsylvania.
Rev. Jacob Davis was baptized and received in the Shrewsbury Seventh Da
y Baptist Church in the year 1772 and was licensed to preach by the Chu
ch on the 19rh of June 1774.
"Rev. Jacob Davis served during the Revolutionary War, as Chaplain, wit
h frequent furloughs to come home to tend his church." (Viola Trainer).
It was under the leadership of the Rev. Jacob Davis that the Shrewsbury C
hurch built a house of worship in 1778 on the land donated by Zululon M
axson, by deed dated 3 April 1775; witnessed by Thomas Davis, Jr., John M
axson, and Jacob Davis. (R.H., p, 28-29).
In 1789 the Church voted to sell their building and put the money in th
e treasury, which they did. In Sept. that year they embarked on their j
ourney through Pennsylvania, where they stopped in Fayette County, at t
he residence of Samuel FitzRandolph and organized the Woodbridgetown Se
venth Day Baptist Church, with Rev. Jacob Davis in charge of the meetin
g. Those of the migrant group did not join that church, however, (R.H.)
About 2 1/2 years later when the migrant group settled New Salem, Virgi
ia (now West Virginia), Rev. Jacob Davis was their first Pastor.
