Jacob Hoffmann Family
Jacob Hoffmann was born in Germany September 18, 1936. He was of a fam
ily of seven children, Nick, Peter, Charles, Jacob, Lorance, Adam and M
argarite. His sister and brothers never migrated to America, so Jacob l
ost track of them.
Jacob was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church and married Annett
e Meyer at Romacourt, France in 1857, where they made their home. To t
his union ten children were born: Lisa, Anna, John, Catherine, Madelei
e, Sophie, Eugenie, Caroline, Marie and Joseph.
In 1874 Annette passed away. In 1875 Jacob married Christine Schmidt o
f Butte, Alsace Lorraine. Three children were born in France: Louise, L
ydia and Paul.
In 1882 they sent two of their daughters, Catherine and Anna Schott and f
amily to Gridley, Illinois, where friends lived. Jacob and Christine s
tarted to make arrangements to go to Illinois the following year.
On April 24, 1883, Jacob and sons Paul and Joseph went to Paris to book p
assages, Christine and 7 of the children followed the next day. John a
d Lisa, who were married, never did follow to America. Twice ships we
e filled before they could board, so they had to stay in Antwerp, Belg
ium for five days. The ship's company paid for their hotel and meals u
til they sailed May 2. They arrived in Philadelphia two weeks later, b
oarding a train for Fairbury, Illinois that same evening.
Jacob worked on farms there, then rented acreage at Strawn, Illinois wh
ere Andy was born in 1884. In 1886 they farmed near Forrest, Illinois w
here Maggie was born. In 1891 they bought 160 acres 1/4 mile east and 1
/4 north of Fountain Creek, Illinois, where Sam and Lucy were born. Jac
ob farmed until 1908 when Christine passed away. He rented his land to s
on Andy and moved to Fairbury, Illinois, where he died January 1914.
Jacob Hoffman
Jacob Hoffman passed away at his home in this city Tuesday evening, Jan
uary 20, at 6:20 o'clock. He was born in Germany, and at the time of h
is death was aged 77 years, 4 months and 2 days. Mr. Hoffman was the f
ather of thirteen children, five boys and eight girls, all of whom are l
iving. They are: John, of France; Joseph, of Roanoke; Paul, of Fairbu
y; Andrew, of East Lynn; Sam, of Peoria; Mrs. Albert Swing, Francesvil
le, Ind.; Mrs. Phillip Yost, Forrest; Mrs. S.R. Stoller, Mrs. J.G. Swin
g, and Mrs. Orville Farney, Fairbury; Mrs. Anna Schott, Mrs. Geo. Bauer
, Cissna Park; Mrs. Jefferson Spring, Danvers.
Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman and family came to America about thirty years ago, a
d for a time lived in the vicinity of Forrest and Strawn. He moved to C
issna Park about twenty-three years ago, and about five years ago moved t
o Fairbury, where he resided until his death. He was married twice, hi
s second wife passing away five years ago.
Mr. Hoffman was a good Christian man and well liked by everyone.
Funeral services will be held from the German Apostolic Church of this c
ity this afternoon and the remains laid to rest in the Fairbury cemeter
y.
