Obituaries
Norman Lee Likness
MORAVIA -- Norman Lee Likness, 65, of Skinner Hill Road, Moravia, passe
d away unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at University Hospital, Syra
cuse, after a long illness.
Norm was born Nov. 14, 1938, in Webster, S.D., the son of the late Herm
an and Beatrice Holland Likness. He was a former resident of Pierpont, S
.D., until 1949, then moved to Pukwana, S.D., graduating from high scho
ol there in 1956. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1956 and served until 1
961. While stationed at Thule AFB in Greenland, he was part of the team w
ho helped track Santa Claus each Christmas Eve. Following his service t
ime, he worked for IBM for 27 years in Manassa, Va. and Owego, retiring e
arly in 1991.
He married Marilyn Partello of Moravia Aug. 21, 1960. They lived and wo
ked in Pierpont, S.D. for five years, where they owned a local grocery s
tore. Norm was very active in the church and was a founder of the Pierp
ont Senior Citizens Building.
He moved to Moravia in 1991 and became active in the Owasco Valley Hist
orical Society, as a reader for the children's story hour at Powers Lib
ary, and was a member and active participant in the activities of Chri
st United Methodist Church of Locke and Moravia, serving on many commit
tees.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Moravia; two sons, Mark Likness a
d his wife Judy of Baltimore, Md. and Eric Likness of Rochester; one d
aughter, Cheryl Montgomery and her husband Matt of Charlottesville, Va.
; two brothers, Lawrence Likness and wife Phyllis of Cathlamet, Wash. a
d Timothy Likness of Ridgefield, Wash.; two sisters, Audrey Picker of A
lington, S.D. and Debra Fillback and her husband James of Vancouver, W
ash.; four nieces and four nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Gerry Likness.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, in the Wade Fu
eral Home, 22 Church St., Moravia. Spring burial will be in Indian Mou
d Cemetery, Moravia. The Rev. David Hays will officiate. Visitation w
ill be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home. Friends w
ishing may send contributions to Christ United Methodist Church or Four T
own First Aid Squad.
