Carl Swing
By The Pontiac Public Library
Pontiac---Carl Swing was born at Frankfort-on-the-Maine, Germany, and a
mid scenes familiar to the great Goethe, passed from boyhood to manhood
, equipping himself in the meantime in the art of ladies' high class ta
iloring.
From the first dawn of seriousness his nature was profoundly relig
ious, and this inclination grew in after years to potential proportions
.
Realizing that the United States offered larger opportunities than e
xisted in his native land, he came here while still a young man, and af
ter locating in Akron, Ohio, married Salina Bollinger, a native of Scha
ufhausen, Switzerland.
In 1877 he brought his family to Livingston County, locating on a f
arm south of Chatsworth, where his death occurred August 10, 1880, whil
e at the zenith of his powers.
The untimely passing of Mr. Swing was the more to be regretted, as h
e had just become located in the midst of the most favorable of agricul
tural surroundings, and it seemed that many more years of happiness and u
sefulness remained to him.
His tailoring or farming operations were really secondary avenues o
f activity, for his mind and heart dwelt constantly upon the moral cond
ition of the race and for many years he sought its uplift as a preacher i
the German Christian or Amish church.
The self-sacrificing and impersonal labor of Amish clergy appeals t
o men of high moral caliber and unselfish character, as they received n
o stipulated compensation, working solely for the cause in which their s
ympathies are enlisted.
Mr. Swing was an exception even among these consecrated men, and h
is devotion and faithfulness won him the confidence and gratitude of ma
y outside his own denomination. He had a hearty, cheerful greeting.
In his wake, there arose better community feeling, greater honesty
, nobler aspirations and cleaner, saner living, and of him it may be tr
uthfully said that he left the world the better for his having sojourne
d in it.
The wife whose aims and sympathies were so closely knit to those o
f Mr. Swing survived him until February 9, 1900.
To them were born five sons, of whom John, the oldest died at the a
ge of twenty-nine years; Charles died in infancy; Henry is a farmer nea
Remington, Indiana, and as were his parents, is a member of the Amish c
hurch; Albert also is a farmer in Wolcott, Indiana; and Joseph G. is a m
erchant in Fairbury.

Hi Megan,
I'm attaching files from the Henry Edward Schwing side of Karl Schwing'
s family.
A change of plans, I have added Joseph Gilbert and Albert Alfred's side t
oo. There sure is a lot of them!!!
The first file is a copy from Lydia Schwing Marti that she typed many y
ears ago. Lydia is a great aunt to me Grandpa Ben's sister. I come f
om Henry Edward, Ben Franklin, Ray Swing and then me-Marsha.
I noticed that Salome and Karl's names are spelled differently. I know t
hat they are the same people inspite of the spelling difference.
You have done a magnificent job collecting information on Albert and Jo
seph!!! Thank you. I just didn't know where to look and I'm using my w
ork computer to look on the Internet. I have noticed that money is nec
essary to look in some files.
I know that I have a picture of Albert Swing Jr, Harligen, Texas somewh
ere. It is from the mid-50's. In the picture may be his wife and chil
dren. I don't know, maybe you can identify the people when I scan the p
icture into a file and send it to you.
When Henry Edward's children moved to Francesville, they were using the s
pelling Swing. Grandpa Ben and a brother started a cafe on Bill Stree
t, 1911--the sign reads Swing. Grandpa Ben advertised in the Francesvi
lle high school year book. Sure is interesting. I have a picture of G
andpa Ben and some men in front of the cafe. If you would like pictur
es to put on the web like you did for your family, I can email them to y
ou.
Gotta go,

History of the Schwing Family
Karl Schwing was born in Darm-Stat, Germany in the year 1813. His fath
er and mother lived in Alsack, France, a small place which was owned by F
ance then by Germany. Again there was war, in that war his father was k
illed, his mother then went back to live in Darm-Stat, Germany to be wi
th her people (nothing known of her family), a few months later Karl II
I, their first and only child was born. Karl III grew to manhood and m
arried in Germany. Their son Karl, IV was born, mother died a few days l
ater. Karl III married again. Sometime later he and his wife decided t
o come to America with thier little son Karl IV. It was a trip of 2 to 3 m
onths for they had only sailing ships at that time. A month before the
y reached New York their baby girl was born, 2 weeks later the mother d
ied and was buried at sea. Again he was left alone. This time with 2 m
other-less little ones. Two weeks later he arrived in New York with hi
s son Karl IV and daughter Margaret who was only a month old. Oh how h
eart breaking, dreary and alone he must have been when he arrived in Ak
on, Ohio a strange land. He knew a few people in Akron who met him an
d cared for them, that was in the year 1849. He was a member and minis
ter of the Lutheran Church but due to the death of his wife and being i
a new place he did not feel he could take up the ministry at that tim
e. In the year 1850 he met Salome Bollinger and in 1851 they were marr
ied and made their first home with the two children Karl IV and Margare
t. Their son John B. was born in 1852. In the fall of 1853 Karl IV an
d Margaret died of then an almost incurable childrens sickness. An un
ending sorrow for grandmother as Margaret was the only little girl. Ka
l III and Salome lived in Akron for 24 years where their five sons wer
e born.
Salome Bollinger was born September 22, 1821 in Zurich, Switzerland. I
the year 1848 with two brothers, a sister and brother-in-law came to C
leveland, Ohio. The sister and her husband stayed and lived there many y
ears and died, having no children. Both of Salomes brothers were in t
he Civil War, one did not come home. After the war brother Baldes went t
o Nebraska where he lived many years, he never married. He would come t
o Fairbury, Illinois to visit his sister and family. In his last years h
e lived in the Solders Home near Quincy, Illinois where he died and wa
s buried. Grandmother had no other relatives here except two nephews, M
ilton and Jacob Bollinger, they were cousins. Milton went out west but n
o one knew just where, after awhile no one heard of him again. Jacob m
arried and some of his family lived in and near Gerard, Ohio.
Sons of Karl and Saolme (Bollinger) Schwing:
John B. born in 1852 and died in Akron, Ohio August 1876
Karl B. the V was born in 1854 and died September 1857
Henry E. was born August 30, 1856 and died October 23, 1942
Albert A. born October 24, 1859 and died October 9, 1922
Joseph G. born August 10, 1861 and died July 29, 1948
As there was no Lutheran Church nearby they went t the Reformed Church. T
hen at the place where he worked he met some of the faith of our presen
t church where they attended and were faithful members. Karl was again a m
inister to the day of his death. The Schwing family lived in Akron, Oh
io until 1876 or 77. The sons didnt like to work in town, they wanted t
o farm. It was not easy to get farms so they decided to move Illinois. T
hey located near Chatsworth, Illinois on a farm they bought. On August 1
0, 1880 Karl III, the father died and was buried in and what is still k
own as the Southside Cemetery, south of Fairbury, Illinois. The mothe
Salome stayed on the farm with her sons. Henry married Emma Slegal o
October 2, 1881 and rented a farm nearby. Albert and Joseph stayed o
the farm with Salome. Albert married Katherine Huffman in February 1
884. Joseph married his first wife Anna Schappy on February 7, 1886 an
d moved to a farm near Fairbury. Then Henry moved back to the farm wit
h Albert and stayed there until the summer of 1888. The farm was then s
old and they both bought another farm near Cissna Park, Illinois. They l
ived on their farms until the fall of 1898. Salome died on January 7, 1
900. Henry sold his farm and moved to a farm near Lamar, Missouri and s
tayed there until 1907. Then he and his family moved to a farm near Re
mington, Indiana, lived there a short time and then moved to Francesvil
le, Indiana. After a few years they moved to a farm near Kouts, Indian
a. Henry and Emma had 13 children. Their son John took over farming fo
a few years. Henry made his home with his children until he died on O
ctober 23, 1944 and was buried besides his wife Emma who died on July 2
9,1923, at Francesville, Indiana.
Alberts family lived on their farm until 1905. They sold their farm a
d moved to another farm near Wolcott, Indiana. A few years later boug
ht a farm in Francesville, Indiana where they lived until Albert died o
October 9, 1922. Alberts wife Katherine moved to town and died Marc
h 15, 1931. They had13 children.
Joseph stayed in Fairbury where he had a hardware and implement store. H
e had a good business there. His first wife Anna died June 19, 1888 th
ee days after their daughter Anna Z. was born. Joseph and Anna also h
ad a son Walter H. born February 23, 1887. What a sad time to be left a
lone with two little ones. He did have his mother who stayed with him a
d cared for him and little Walter. Annas mother and sister Carrie ca
ed for the baby Anna. Then in the year 1889 he sold the farm and move
d to Fairbury. Joseph then married his second wife Eugenia Huffman on F
ebruary 25, 1890. They had four children. Eugenia died on June 12, 19
00. Again he was left alone with his little ones. Eugenia was a dear a
d loving wife and mother. She was sadly missed by all who knew her. J
oseph married again for the third time to Lydia Huffman on September 1, 1
901. They had 11 children. Joseph died on July 29,1948 and Lydia died S
eptember 21, 1957. Joseph had a total of 17 children with three wives.
